ゲスト Valerie Soe
Join us for a screening of the 2019 documentary Love Boat: Taiwan, followed by an interview with director Valerie Soe. The film tells the story of the Overseas Compatriot Youth Study Tour, a long-running, government-sponsored program bringing young people of Taiwanese descent to Taiwan for language and cultural instruction. It provides a window into one aspect of the Taiwanese diaspora experience, and how this has evolved through the generations. After the film, Valerie Soe will share her experience of coming to Taiwan for the first time on the "Love Boat" and talk about the complexity of language as a component of diaspora identity.

Why do most writers, even multilingual writers, work in only one language at a time? It's like a painter limiting themselves to one small section of the color palette. This workshop session will begin with poetry readings from writers who have transcended linguistic borders. With that inspiration, we will then play with word prompts to explore the possibilities of multilingual expression for ourselves. In addition to writing material (paper or a notebook), participants are asked to come prepared with three to five favorite words that they have encountered in foreign languages.

ゲスト 郭怡慧/Michelle Kuo
Taiwanese American writer Michelle Kuo (郭怡慧) knows what it's like to work between languages. Her book Reading With Patrick, originally published in the US, has recently been translated and released in Taiwan as 陪你讀下去 (Locus Books), and she is now working on a government-funded project to translate Taiwanese children's books for outside markets. In this reading and discussion with Michelle, we will discuss the challenges of bridging linguistic gaps, the overlap between linguistic expression and identity, and the struggle of trying to achieve Mandarin fluency as an adult.
