Annelous Stiggelbout graduated with an MA from the Sinology department of Leiden University in the Netherlands, and spent time studying and working in both Taiwan and China. She started translating even before graduating, and is now an experienced literary translator, translating Mandarin into Dutch. She has translated works by Taiwanese, Chinese and Hong Kong authors, such as Sanmao, Chan Ho-kei, Liu Zhenyun and Zhang Yueran, which have been published by various major Dutch publishing houses. For her translation of the novel "De spijker" by Zhang Yueran she has been nominated for the 2024 Filter Translation Award, an important award for book translations into Dutch. In addition to her translation work, she is active in promoting Chinese-language literature to Dutch publishers and readers. She lives in Utrecht, in the Netherlands.
Resident planning
At the moment, Taiwanese literature does not yet have a strong position in the Dutch literary landscape. Annelous wishes to change that: She wants to use her residency to broaden and deepen her understanding of the Taiwanese literary landscape, in order to use that knowledge to interest more Dutch publishers in Taiwanese literature and to write about Taiwanese literature for various publications. To that end, she wants to meet authors, literary publishers and literary agents, and she intends to attend as many literary events as she can. In addition, she plans to work on the translation of a Taiwanese short story during her residency. Annelous will give lectures on Taiwanese literature in the Netherlands and about the practice and the challenges of literary translation.
