Annelous Stiggelbout
- Annelous Stiggelbout graduated with an MA from the Sinology department of Leiden University in the Netherlands, and spent time studying and working in both Taiwan and China. She started translating even before graduating, and is now an experienced literary translator, translating Mandarin into Dutch. She has translated works by Taiwanese, Chinese and Hong Kong authors, such as Sanmao, Chan Ho-kei, Liu Zhenyun and Zhang Yueran, which have been published by various major Dutch publishing houses. For her translation of the novel De spijker (The cocoon) by Zhang Yueran she has been nominated for the 2024 Filter Translation Award, an important award for book translations into Dutch. In addition to her translation work, she is active in promoting Chinese-language literature to Dutch publishers and readers. She lives in Utrecht, in the Netherlands.

Lecture on the state of translated Taiwanese literature in the Netherlands: what has been translated? How have these works been received? What are the challenges in having more Taiwanese literature brought to the Netherlands, and how can the position of Taiwanese literature be improved?

Translating Sanmao

Lecture on my experience translating Stories of the Sahara (撒哈拉歲月). Discussion of the unique challenges I encountered in translating this book; of the cooperation with the other translators into English, Spanish and Catalan; of meeting Sanmao's relatives and Sanmao's fans.

Lecture on translating Mandarin into Dutch: how linguistic, literary and cultural differences create translation problems, and the various strategies I employ to resolve one problem after the other.
